Days 1 & 2 - Project Introduction

Materials and Resources Needed:

Resources
  1. Project planning sheet
  2. Project Rubric
  3. How robots are used today PPT (TR)
  4. Student log book


Procedures:

  1. Describe the project
  2. Provide and go over the rubric with the requirements for the final grade
  3. Assign teams: 3-4 members per team
  4. Teacher led PPT discussion on how robotics are used today (TR)
  5. Team members meet to accomplish the following:
    1. In the student log book, brainstorm and come up with a possible task that could be done with a robot
    2. Fill out planning sheet

Days 3 - 5: Building the prototype / trial runs

Materials and Resources Needed:

  1. Project planning sheet
  2. Project Rubric
  3. Robot parts and materials (VEX, FIRST)
  4. Student log book

Procedure:

  1. Build a working prototype for the robot
    • This can be done with Legos, VEX, or other items
    • If students have the capabilities, it can also be done through animation
  2. Test the prototype
  3. Reflect on the process in Student log book

Day 6: Making an effective magazine advertisement


Materials and Resources Needed: Magazine advertisements brought by students:

Procedure:

  1. Background to advertisements
    • Students bring in magazine ads
    • Put the magazine ads around the room.
    • Student circle the room, noting three of their favorite advertisements and explaining why they like them in their Student log book

    • After sitting, students share with their partner why they chose what they did
    • Teacher calls on a few for their answers
    • Lecture: Effective magazine advertisements usually have the following criteria (1) strong visual element (2) some memorable catchphrase (3) explanation and/or description of what is being sold (4) Why the reader should buy the product
    • Students look at the advertisements they chose and journal about how these advertisements used one of these categories especially well in their Student log book
    • Share with partner
    • Teacher chooses some to share with group
  2. Project
    • In groups students brainstorm ideas for their advertisement that would have elements of all four categories
    • Write these ideas down in the student log book


7 – 9: Working on the advertisement

Materials and Resources Needed: Project Rubric

Resources

Procedures:

  1. Each group shares their ideas with another group

    • The other group will give feedback on how well the advertisement hits the four elements and make suggestions for improvement.
    • The other group shares and is given feedback
  2. Groups work on their projects
  3. 10 minutes before the bell rings, groups share once more with a different group and are given the same feedback
  4. The second day, groups finish working on their advertisement.
  5. In Student log book, reflect on the process
    • Some helpful questions might be:
      • How was this exercise useful?
      • What is the benefit of working in groups?
      • What are some of the difficulties in working in groups?
      • How is my group doing? What are some of our struggles? What can we do to make the group more effective?

Day 10-11: Persuasive argument

Resources

Materials and Resources Needed:

  1. Project Rubric
  2. Student log book
  3. Selling Dragster PPT (TR)
  4. Example Magazine Ad (TR)


Procedure:

  1. Watch video on selling object: Persuasive Techniques in Advertising
  2. Teacher makes a point that they are trying to sell to potential buyers
  3. Teacher gives example of trying to sell Dragster as a Magazine ad (TR)
  4. Students work on their own persuasive strategies to sell their prototype robot, recording relections in their Student log book
    • Some helpful questions might be:
      • Why would someone want to buy our product, and what are we doing to help sell this product?
      • What are the difficulties in trying to sell a product?
      • Why is audience important for selling an object?
      • What do you think are the most important aspects of selling a product?  What are you doing to meet these criteria?
  5. Toward the end of the second day, give presentation to another group, getting feedback. Also watch that group and give feedback

Day 12: Test

  1. Make sure all is ready for the presentation
  2. Go over rubric to make sure all is ready

Procedures:

Presentation - Options for Presentation

  1. Present to the class -
    • Class plays role of potential buyer
    • Discussion and question-answer session follow each presentation
    • Class members use rubric to score the presentation and turn this in to the teacher
  2. Present to a panel made up of teachers and community volunteers
    • Panel plays role of businesses/industries looking for new products
    • Discussion and question-answer session follow each presentation
    • Panel uses the rubric to score the presentation

Assessment

  • Rubric (filled out by student or panel and teacher)
  • Reflect on experience in Student log book
    • Some helpful questions might be:
      • How did you feel this project went?
      • What were some of the difficulties? 
      • What was fun to do?
      • How might you do it different next time?
      • How was working in a group?  What were the difficulties? What were the highlights?
      • How does this kind of project get you ready for life outside of school?


Optional Unit Extension

Close the unit with a “Future Opportunities Expo”. This can be done in the following ways depending on the resources available:

  • Have a virtual “Future Opportunities Expo”
    • Interested students research future job opportunities in robotics related industries and share their findings with their classmates through Smart Board presentations or at computer stations.
  • If your school already hosts a job fair, include robotics related industries and make them highly visible by clustering them in one location.
  • Based on student interest and resources available, invite companies to the school on specified days throughout the unit to present what they do and inform students about future opportunities and hiring criteria.
